Reading Education Assistance with Dogs (R.E.A.D.)

Read Program The R.E.A.D. program was piloted in Salt Lake City in the mid-90's. Similar programs are now found throughout the country. All dogs in the program are certified Pet Partners through the Delta Society. The goal at R.E.A.D. is to enhance and improve the self-esteem of children who typically read below their grade level. There is no intimidation for the child to read to a dog. There is just love.

The program was piloted at Soda Creek Elementary during the 2000-2001 school year. In the fall of 2002, the program was reinstated and has been warmly embraced. Katy Harris, a teacher at Soda Creek was instrumental in getting the program set up for the Heeling Friends™ teams.

Canine Good Citizenship

The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program, started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. For more information on Canine Good Citizenship, download a printable document here.
